China's MEMS Mirror Leader Zhixin Sensor Secures State-Backed Funding – OCS Optical Switching Heats Up

Zhixin Sensor Technology (Suzhou) has closed a new funding round led by SMIC’s investment arm, SMIC Yuan – a clear signal of state-backed semiconductor capital backing MEMS micromirror arrays for AI data center OCS (optical circuit switching).

Why OCS now? Traditional electrical switches can't keep up with AI cluster bandwidth, power, and latency demands. MEMS micromirror arrays deliver millisecond response, <1dB insertion loss, high integration, and ruggedness – emerging as the preferred OCS path for high-density GPU fabrics.

Zhixin (founded 2019) is one of the few Chinese players with full-stack MEMS micromirror array technology – from design to wafer processing, packaging, and test. Its 300×300 and 320×320 arrays are already in mass production with >90% yield, cost-competitive vs. imports, and shipping to multiple tier-1 customers. It remains the only domestic supplier shipping OCS-grade MEMS mirror arrays at volume.

This Series C funding will expand capacity, develop next-gen high-density arrays, and accelerate import substitution. SMIC Yuan brings not just capital but foundry and packaging resources – a critical advantage for scaling.

Roadmap: moving from current port counts to 1024×1024 ultra-high-density arrays, targeting 10K+ GPU clusters. Industry estimates peg the global OCS market at >$10B by 2030.
